Making a house a home.
When I moved into my new house, the promise I made to myself was that in the first year of living here, I would unpack every single box I came with. It’s been 7 months, and I haven’t hit that goal yet. Nor have I hit my other goal of decorating my space and making it feel like home. I love a lot due to work, and I never feel fully settled. I wanted to be intentional about cultivating my living space this time around. So, the first thing I did was purchase a big girl couch from Albany Park. I wanted a nice sectional that I could live on to be the focal point of my living room. The problem is, that’s all that is in the living room right now… 7 months later. There’s a bookshelf that I managed to fix up and push into the back corner of the room, but everything else is bare.
This serves as the ‘before’ for my main living space. I wanted to create a wish list for the things I plan on adding to the space, including decor items, more furniture, and rugs. Having a nicely curated space is important to me because it eases my anxiety. More than anything, I like when I have things in order. Right now it just feels like an open space that I exist in, and that I cannot enjoy. I also want the space to be fulfilling for my daughter. I want her to believe that this is a home for us now.
For a long time, we shuffled around different apartments, which was stressful but more importantly very isolating for both of us. I didn’t feel comfortable letting her roam outside in the apartment complex because there were too many dangerous variables, the worst being cars flying by. In this quiet little neighborhood, I don’t have any of those problems anymore. We are acquainted with our neighbors, and the parents on our street all band together to collectively watch the kids as they play outside. It feels warm here on the outside. I want it to feel warm on the inside too. Check below for a shortlist of what I plan on adding to my living room. I’ll keep you posted.
Full-length mirror (Who doesn’t like a good full-body selfie)
A desk for a dedicated workspace
Large area rug
Mounted TV
Artwork to fill wall space
A sofa table (to organize some things behind the couch
At least two plants (I too, would like to be a plant mom)
That sums it up! I am thinking about possibly using a virtual interior design service because this task seems daunting and I might end up needing help. If I go that route, I’ll provide insight into the process.
